The luxurious Los Sueños Resort in Playa Herradura is easily one of the most stunning Cost Rica resorts I've ever seen! This new complex sits on a 1,100-acre rainforest, but believe me, you're far from roughing it here. During my travels through Costa Rica, I heard a lot about this place so I had to check it out. From high above the tree tops, I could see so much! One of the most impressive features of this community-like resort is its marina. It's actually the only government-sanctioned marina in the country. Boasting 200 wet slips, 100 dry slips and a fuel dock, you could spend your entire trip on the water. One time, I hopped aboard a vessel going out to sport fishing, and let me tell you, it was one of the most spectacular (and scary I'm just a little frog) experiences I've ever had.

The Resort

Los Sueños is one of the newest resorts in Costa Rica, and boy did they think about everything when they constructed it! Everything you could want to do in Costa Rica is wrapped into one little package at Los Sueños. You can play a round of golf, go hiking, get adventurous on a zip line or relax at the spa. The marina itself has a shopping center, dining options and a supply store to cover all your bases before you lay out or you venture into the open waters.

Sportfishing at its Finest

You'll have several different options for charter services once you get to Los Sueños, and I've heard good things about all of them. Because of the calm waters and the prime location of this resort, it is considered to be one of the most productive fisheries in the world. Whether you're a sportfishing enthusiast or you're trying it for the first time there's no better place in Costa Rica to go! These waters are home to the Los Sueños Signature Billfishing Series, so you know the waters are ideal for casting a line. The Costa Rican reefs and rocks provide both novice and avid fishers a unique inshore fishing experience - it's a great place to take the whole family.

Although I tend to like nighttime better, I hopped aboard a charter that was setting out on a full day adventure. You can also head on an inshore fishing excursion that lasts only about half a day. I'd recommend the full day because there's just nothing else like being out on the water all day long! As a frog, I didn't really understand the excitement of catching fish, but now I think it's similar to when I catch a fly or cricket! The only exception is that fishers will release their catch back into the water, but it's the excitement that surrounds the thrill of getting a bite on a line.

What kind of Fish are here?

Depending on what time of year your travel plans are, you'll hook up (literally) with all kinds of different species. Get ready to have one of the best catches of your life here - 20 catches of billfish is the norm!. You're also likely to catch 40-pound Dorado, 300-pound yellowfin tuna and massive snapper here even a beginner will feel like a pro! Marlin, especially black and blue marlin, is the most common between December and April. You'll probably have the best luck at one of these big guys during the fall. October to December is the best time to catch a snapper fish. Throughout the year, you can catch roosterfish, snook and wahoo.
