Climb the highest Mountain: Chirripo

Chirripo National Park is home to the tallest mountain in Central America. Part of the Talamanca Mountains, this sprawling nature reserve covers an area of 125,600 acres and boasts dozens of hiking trails. Cerro Chirripo Grande, which stands at an elevation of more than 12,500 feet, is a hiker's paradise, and in optimal weather conditions, offers stunning glimpses of both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea from the summit.

Even the most avid hikers won't be able to climb Cerro Chirripo Grande in a single day. As such, there are two ranger stations located on the mountain where weary adventurers can lay their heads before tackling the remainder of the ascent. Even during the height of the dry season, the elevation of this mighty mountain means that temperatures can be a little chilly, so travelers should wear suitable clothing and bring plenty of water with them. Despite the cool clime, hikers will also want to bring plenty of sunscreen, as the mountain's proximity to the equator means that the UV index of the sunlight in this area can be intense.

Stunning Natural Beauty

As you climb Cerro Chirripo Grande, you'll be able to see some of the most exotic plants in Costa Rica. The miles of hiking trails wind through the lush forests of San Gerardo de Rivas, which is home to an incredible array of flowers, trees and some of Costa Rica's most remarkable wildlife. You won't see too many treefrogs, though, as we prefer to stick to lower elevations!

As one of Costa Rica's largest premontane forests, the lush hillsides of Chirripo National Park are home to oak trees that can reach heights of 165 feet, as well as dense thickets of bamboo and tropical ferns. This makes exploring Chirripo National Park an amazing experience for nature enthusiasts, so don't forget to bring a camera!

Hiking through this stunning national park and conquering Central America's tallest mountain is an unforgettable experience. When you reach the summit, why not take a picture and share it with us on our Facebook page? Happy hiking!
