Situated less than 5 kilometers from the heart of San Jose, Best Western Irazu Hotel & Casino merges the bustle of the city life with the laid-back feel of the countryside. What I love about it is that it's just far enough from the noise where it doesn't keep you up at night, yet still close to all of the action. Last time I stayed at the Best Western Irazu Hotel, I soaked in the local attractions such as Braulio Carrillo National Park and Costa Rican Art Museum.

It may not tout the exotic appeal of jungle hotels, but the Best Western Irazu offers convenience, comfort and great customer service! Over the last several months, I've noticed that the hotel has been undergoing renovations, which are expected to be finished by around January 2014. I can't wait to see the new improvements for the new year.

With 326 guest rooms that feature cable television, around-the-clock room service and free WiFi, the Best Western Irazu Hotel & Casino was like heaven for me! Each room is equipped with a bathtub, coffee-maker and free Costa Rican coffee, as well as a desk and work area. Some of my human business friends enjoy staying here since it's so close to Juan Santamaria International Airport. After work's over and it's time for play, relax in the hot tub, take a dip in the pool or grab a drink at the bar. The hotel offers happy hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., which is a great opportunity to meet people over cocktails.

Notably, children ages 12 and under won't be charged for the room if they're staying with a paying adult. Good thing I don't have any big kids. The stay of the third and fourth person in a room is on the house. You can ask for rollaway beds and a crib for a fee.

I'm not quite tall enough for it, but another popular hotel amenity are the tennis courts, perfect for getting in some outdoor activity under the warm Costa Rican sun.

Restaurant and Bar

There's a Denny's attached to the Best Western Irazu, providing reliable meals from morning to evening. Before I head out on a day around town, I like to grab a complimentary breakfast. Sangria Bar serves up tasty drinks ad the traditional one from Spain, Sangria for the weary or wired traveler.

Casino

If you like rolling the dice, be sure to check out the Casino Concorde located within the hotel. I'm not much of a gambler myself, but I can definitely see the appeal! Get out the chips and get ready to splurge a little. Are you feeling lucky? It's a great way to unwind and reap the full winnings of a Costa Rican vacation.

Nearby Activities

One of my favorite aspects about this hotel is how close it is to attractions in San Jose. The Museum of Costa Rican Art is less than 3 kilometers away, housing the largest collection of state's art, including works dating from the 1850's to present. Sitting nearby is the Spirogyra Butterfly Garden, known as the "green oasis" inside the city limits. This is where I come to hang out when I want to hop around the trees to feel at home. Beyond the peaceful greenery, you won't want to miss the Pre-Columbian Gold and Numismatic Museum, which packs more than 1,600 artifacts that trace back to 500 AD. The museum is located below the Plaza de la Cultura, across the street from the lavish National Theater.

Not only are family-friendly attractions located close by, but Juan Santamaria International Airport is located 14 kilometers away. You can drive there, otherwise the Best Western offers a free shuttle service that operates from the hotel grounds to the airport. The shuttle leaves every 20 minutes.
