Culinary experimentation

Although you can grab a bite to eat almost anywhere in San Jose, some of the city's most popular restaurants pride themselves on offering patrons something a little different. Chefs from all over the world come here to use the fresh ingredients and experiment with traditional menus to create intriguing, delicious meals with an international twist.

One such restaurant is Grano de Oro, which is located between Avenues 2 and 4 in La Sabana. Known for its eclectic and innovative menu, this popular eatery serves a variety of exciting meals, such as local sea bass encrusted with macadamia nuts. It also offers a wide range of meals that will appeal to carnivores, such as deliciously prepared lamb, duck and rabbit dishes.

Another renowned restaurant foodies spending time in San Jose won't want to miss is Park Cafe, which can be found one block north of Rostipollos in Sabana Norte. Owned by Michelin-star winning chef Richard Neat, Park Cafe boasts a menu that blends cuisine from around the world, including French, Italian and Mediterranean dishes.

A taste of the Orient

As well as traditional fare, Asian food is very popular in Costa Rica. Visitors will not have to go far to enjoy some delicious Oriental cuisine, and the first stop foodies should make on their gastronomic tour of San Jose is Tin Jo, which is conveniently located downtown San Jose.

Tin Jo goes far beyond the simple chow mein and fried rice offered by some other Asian restaurants in the city, providing patrons an extensive menu that blends Cantonese, Szechuan, Thai, Japanese and Malaysian cuisine. Some of the dishes here are served in interesting ways, such as soup served in edible rice noodle bowls, and the pineapple shrimp in coconut curry is served in a hollowed-out coconut shell!

These are just a few of San Jose's best restaurants. No matter what you're in the mood for, you're sure to find a delicious meal that appeals to both your palate and your wallet. Bon apetit!
